It’s the most wonderful time of the year… in Romania! ‘Tis the season to be jolly and check out the 8 most beautiful events that you could enjoy in summer 2016 in Romania! Starting with TIFF and ending with Sia.
The best thing about any festival is the amount of diverse events that happen during a few days time. And the amount of creative people involved. It feels like London Fashion Week all over again. With everyone gathering together to celebrate & enjoy some form of art: be it movies, dance, theater, music, photography, architecture, fashion, advertising or performing arts.
Summer of 2016 might have one of the best line-up’s ever and here’s at least 8 reasons to enjoy this next few months in Romania.
1.TIFF 2016 – Transylvania International Film Festival
27th of May to 5th of June 2016 in Cluj-Napoca
The summer always starts with a fresh week of inspiration from Cluj Napoca, probably the most creative place in Romania, the best designers, photograpers & painters live there or started out in this lovely old town. The city becomes crowded with actors, directors, writers, art & culture bloggers and journalists, architects, designers and all sorts of creative, free-spirited people who work in the movie-making industry, in the press or are just movie aficionados and fans.
Whether you’re going out to eat or just working in a coffee shop, there’s big chances you will see a huge actor or director sitting at the table next door. I’m not talking about celebrities, I’m talking about talented artists that are working on amazing movies.
2. Maroon 5 – V Tour Live
5th of June in Constitutiei Square, Bucharest
(the truth is out, Adam Levine is a jumper, he has this beautiful habbit of jumping in every live show, let’s hope I’ll make a good photo of him jumping in Bucharest)
So Adam, we’ll meet again. Sort of. A few years back, Coca-Cola sent me – as one of the two Romanian bloggers that were part of the delegation – to London to enjoy 24 hours in the studio with Maroon 5. They had to write, compose, produce, record and release a new song in 24 hours under the Coca-Cola Music Sessions and journalists were allowed to watch them work. It was and still remains one of the most uniques experiences ever. And after having a bit of one-on-one time with them, I started having a huge respect for them and their work.
The setlist for the V Tour – it’s the first time Maroon 5 will be playing live in Bucharest – includes Animals, One More Night, Stereo Hearts, Love Somebody, Maps, This Love, She Will be Loved, Sunday Morning, Moves Like Jagger and, of course, Sugar. And a few other songs. But mostly, these are going to be the songs that they played for most of their tour so far.
3. FITS 2016 – Sibiu International Theatre Festival
10th to 19th of June 2016 in Sibiu
Wouldn’t miss this for the world! I’ve been covering it for the past 3-4 years and it’s been a very inspiring experience. Their motto this year is “Building trust” and it will bring out so many theater, dance and performing artists from Switzerland, South America, Japan, China, Portugal, Israel and many many many more countries.
The Sibiu Festival is said to be third biggest and best one in the world, the first one being the one in Avignon.
And if you’re not fond of theather plays – in either Romanian, English or either languages – you can enjoy the street performance that vary from circus plays to performers that interract with the crowd and play with visual illusions. There’s also live music, live concerts going from one end of the old city center to the other. There’s also costume exhibitions, books releases and photography & art events.
The best thing, for me, about FITS is always the dancing. There’s always the best companies from Israel that bring out their best shows and it always looks they’re floating or flying above the stage, rather than standing on it.
4. Philip Glass & Kronis Quartet: Dracula
4th and 5th of July 2016, Teatrul de Vara din Herastrau, Bucharest
2nd of July 2016 in Bran Castel, next to Brasov
So, if you don’t know who Philip Glass is, he is one of the most influential composers and music makers from the 20th century. He’s the Mozart of this generation. And the main reason to fall in love with his is that he did the soundtrack for The Hours and a dozen of other well-know and well-loved movies, theater plays and dance plays.
In 1999, he finished a new soundtrack for the 1931 film Dracula. And he is going to bring it to Romania with the Kronos Quartet, his favorite colaborators since 1985 until now.
If you like minimal classic music, this is your kind of show.
5. Electric Castle 2016
14th to 18th of July 2016, Banffy Castle, next to Cluj-Napoca
All roads lead to Cluj Napoca this summer.
Last year, Electric Castle was the most discussed events and brands of the year because of the rainy, muddy weather. It’s going to be out in the nature, in the wild, next to the Transylvanian spectacular domain of Banffy Castle. You won’t find Dracula in the area but there’s a lot international artists, a huge camping area and a beautiful scenery.
The line-up for Electric Castle 2016 includes Bastille – which is probably the most exciting act for everyone who has seen them 2 years ago at Summer Well – Skrillex, Sigur Ros (which is also very thrilling), Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, Gorgon City, Dub Pistols, Elliphant (can’t wait to see her again too), Rusko and many many many more!
6. Untold Festival
4th to 7th of August 2016, Cluj Arena in Cluj Napoca
As I was saying, all roads lead to Cluj this summer. After they got their “European Youth Capital” title last year, they’re bringing a lot of great things this summer as well. And Untold Festival is going to be the craziest one yet.
It’s not exactly my type of music but everyone has talked about how great the experience of the festival has been last year. And they just won the Best Major Festival Award at the Festival Awards.
This year’s line-up for Untold Festival 2016 includes Afrojack, Ella Eyre, Armin van Buuren, Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Faithless, Fedde Le Grand, Parov Stelar, Nervo, Scooter, James Arthur, Nneka (which I interviews a few years ago at Summer Well and it was one of the most emotional meetings I’ve ever had with an artist), Kwabs, The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Sasha, John Digweed, Borgore, Chase & Status and many many more.
I think it might be the festival with the biggest dance-house-club-dubstep names for this summer in Europe, it’s got a crazy amount of well-known DJs & artists.
7. Summer Well 2016
13th to 14th of August 2016 at Domeniul Stirbey in Buftea, next to Bucharest
Well, the bad news about this one is already out there: The 1975 won’t be coming to the festival anymore and it was the most expected presence after their electric and energetic show from two years ago. I was looking forward to singing along to their new album but it’s okay, the line-up is still great.
Summer Well has been making our summers more beautiful for many years now. And for 2016, we will hear & see The Chemical Brothers, Hurts, Years & Years (this is very exciting, of course), The Neighbourhood, BORNS and many more.
There are going to be a lot of things to do before, between and during the shows, the attractions at Summer Well are neverending and there’s never enough time to enjoy both the music and the other stuff.
8. Sia & Rihanna – LIVE
14th to 17 august 2016, Constitutiei Square in Bucharest
Finally, after many world tours, Rihanna is coming to Romania. Better late than never. She’s bringing her ANTI tour to Bucharest during the ZuTopia Music Festival 2016.
It’s going to be an interesting kind of day – 14th of August – because we’re going to have both a full day of Summer Well and the Rihanna show happening in the same time.
But more than anything else, there’s the SIA show. And the OH Land show. And the Selah Sue. Which are all happening in the same night – on the 17th of August.
So what’s your best pick for summer 2016?
